“Metamates” is what Mark Zuckerberg wants his employees to call each other. The new name is being mocked both inside and outside the company.
The name “Metamates” will be used instead of “Facebookers.” This is because the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp changed its name to Meta last fall, which emphasized its focus on building a “metaverse.”
On his Facebook page, Mark Zuckerberg said that now is the right time to change our values and our cultural operating system. He made the announcement at a company-wide meeting this week, and he wrote about it.
However, Twitter users said that the new name sounded like a dating app from a different world. There were a lot of people who said that it sounded too much like school to them.
As one person on Twitter put it, “Metamates should come to the Metatorium for a Metameeting.”

It was a joke on Twitter that one person was eating “lunchables with my metamates.”
“Metamates? Another person on social media said it was more like “metastases.”
As another person on Twitter said, “It kind of sounds like a brand name for a condom.” A popular condom brand called Mates is sold in the United Kingdom, so that’s true.
Instagram has been using the term “Metamates” for a long time, says Andrew Bosworth of Meta’s Facebook division. It’s a reference to a naval phrase that Instagram has used for a long time.

Zuckerberg said Tuesday that the new name “Meta, Metamates, Me” is about being good stewards of the company and its mission.
I think it has to do with the sense of responsibility that we have for our team’s success and for each other as team members. Take care of our company and each other.

Zuckerberg’s move from a social media company to one that focuses on the metaverse hasn’t been without bumps.
The company lost $200 billion in value this month when it said that it had lost users to a newer app called TikTok.
If you look at Facebook’s Reality Labs, the part of the company that is leading the charge into the metaverse, it lost $3.3 billion in the quarter even though it made $877 million.
The company made $33.67 billion from targeted advertising on its social network in the last three months. The loss is just a drop in the bucket.
It was early in the day on Wall Street on Wednesday, and Meta Platforms shares were down about 2%.
